  The Music Awards was conceived in an attempt to foster the development of music as an industry. With the limited development options available to St. Lucia as a nation, it is important to tap into our creative resources to not only encourage deeper social cohesion but also to generate new streams of revenue for all sectors of our society. Given the proliferation of musical talent, it is fitting for the private sector to assist in nurturing this promising sector. Rationale Most industries and professions have a system for recognizing their members who do well. This holds true in the areas of tourism, insurance, accounting and so on. Such recognition often takes the form of awards. These awards are seen as a means of acknowledging the work of the recipients, encouraging practitioners to continue to excel and increasing the quality of musical production In other countries, in the Caribbean and beyond, music awards are given out annually. Important ones include the (US) Grammy Awards given out by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences and the British Music Industry (BMI) Awards. Closer to home there are awards in Trinidad & Tobago and now Barbados. Awards go to writers, performers, producers and others, in a range of genres. Despite, and indeed, because of, the incipient state of its music industry, St. Lucia stands to benefit from a system of musical awards. Goal The goal of the Music Awards is to foster the development of the national musical industry by recognizing the works of, and encouraging the continued quest for excellence by St. Lucians involved in the industry. Objectives The objectives of the Awards are, inter alia, to: - Identify and recognize songwriters, artistes, producers and other relevant persons who have created or rendered the most outstanding works during the relevant period;
- Recognize persons who have made outstanding long-term contributions to the national musical industry;
- Help in establishing quality standards for the music industry by setting strict criteria for giving out awards;
- Acknowledge and encourage persons perceived to have potential for future development;
- Raise the national profile of music and musicians;
- Raise the regional and international profile of St. Lucian performers and the St. Lucian music industry.
- Encourage the sale of local music.
